UrbanPoling Nordic Walking Poles

What is Nordic Walking?

Nordic walking also called ski walking, exerstriding, or pole walking, – combines the aerobic and strength building benefits of cross-country skiing with walking.  This full-body, cardio-muscular exercise that engages the arms, back, stomach, and legs. This combination promotes circulation, correct breathing, burns more calories than walking alone and develops total body coordination and improved posture; All in a dynamic way that is applicable to a healthy lifestyle.

Nordic walking is one of the safest physical activities. There is an exceptionally easy, low-effort entry into the exercise, and lots of room for growth. This is why a seventy-year-old arthritic grand-mother and Olympic athlete can both participate in Nordic walking together and get something from the exercise. To see it, you wouldn't think that something so simple can be so effective. But it is!

"Even Demi Moore & Suzanne Somers are among the stars reportedly exercising with walking poles."
- First For Women Magazine 10/09/06 pg 34.

Are there other benefits that make it so attractive to the average person and athlete alike?

Poling is a year round activity designed to be done in urban setting (sidewalks and street surfaces) but can also be done in snow or off road surroundings.

Don't be fooled, just because anyone can do it, it does not mean that it has little exercise value. The activity is the primary dry-land training method for elite competitive skiers - it is a serious exercise.

Our superior quality poles from UrbanPoling were designed by fitness walking pioneer Tom Rutlin and by a panel of CAOT Certification Occupational Therapists. Simply put, UrbanPoling places quality, safety, and performance in front of everything they do. Compare our five star rated products against other cheaper priced poles and see the difference. Occupational Therapists agree that Urban Poles ergonomic design meets the health needs of our customers.

Urban Poles
Strapless Handles
Cushiongrip tipsUnlike other poles being marketed, Urban Poles are specifically designed for Nordic walking. Some of the poles on the market today are really just cross-country ski poles, downhill ski poles or ordinary trekking poles. The features of our poles are designed to offer bio-mechanically correct use, great versatility on all terrain types and using Urban Poling techniques developed by Nordic walking pioneer Tom Rutlin and by a panel of CAOT Certification Occupational Therapists. UrbanPoling walking poles feature strapless ergonomic grips, easily adjustable length and rubber tips as well as carbide tips. Our ergonomic strapless handle means you do not have to grip the handle hard unlike other cross-country styled poles. Moreover, this handle greatly absorbs the shock from walking on city surfaces. With other poles the shock is transferred directly into your arms, which can over time be damaging to your joints and lead to fatigue. Urban poles can be easily adjusted to fit persons between 4’2” and 6'2". Simply adjust the poles according to the “user’s height” markings on the lower shaft section and tighten. Another unique and important aspect of our poles is the boot shaped tips.  Designed and approved by panel therapists, this rubber tip has 3 functions:
  • This boot-like design flexes on contact for a softer feel, absorb shock and vibration when the pole strike the ground on city surfaces. Reducing the transfer of energy directly into your arms, preventing joint injuries
  • The boot-like tread provides better contact and more resistance as you apply force to the poles. They're 30% lighter than bell-shaped rubber tips.
  • These tips also help propel you forward creating a mechanism to walk faster and achieving a better workout.

The rubber tips install quickly and easily over carbide-tipped ferrules and can be removed in seconds whenever you find yourself in need of more traction in any slippery or unstable surface condition.
