First, overtraining is a serious medical condition that requires medical attention, you would not do field testing for overtraining, a doctor would work the overtraining differential and make a diagnosis.

Overreaching precedes overtraining, but overreaching can be reversed by rest. overtraining does not respond well to rest immediately.

Transient fatigue from daily training is what requires daily measurement.

The true measurement of fatigue is reduced power output for a given heart rate/ lactate level.

We then have perceived exertion (it feels harder than usual).

The orthostatic heart rate test does not always correlate well with minor fatigue (it say you're fine but really you need a recovery day) but does correlate better with a very fatigued state.

however the O/S test when done over many weeks can start to show individule trends and should be used as a general indication of training adaptation.
