The purpose of using the PowerTap on the tacx was to create a calibration method to make the tacx accurate, for those who have a tacx, but don't have an on bike power metre.

Also, with the tacx the computer can change the brake power so that you can high resistance at a low rpm, tacx does make a non electronic trainer that does this, but the computer control ads more precision. But you're right, so long as you can measure power with one method, you don't really require the other.

The roll down time from 40k was about the same as from 30k (about 6 seconds), perhaps 1 second longer, with the factor set at 118 on the tacx.
