Hi Cris ,
Thanks for this nice summary of the actual training/periodisation question.
I think one of the problems Dan , myself and I assume other coaches or physios have is, implementing this very clear theory into practical work.
One of your examples is Dr. E. Bannister. His work is very interesting and he is using his own theory for himself. There are other "theroretical guys in Europe I could name here , and all or a lot of them have one thing in common : Implementing problems of the theory.
( In Bannisteres case Nelson as an athlete, and all the once they tried the theory. )
Remember the idea of : If you like to repeat something you need education, to challange education you need a brain.?
So the challange would be to gather some practical ideas from Cris and others and than do an open fair challange.
A lot we try in high performance sport is often not well researched , but sometimes we have the feeling to try it , either by experinece or athlete feeling , and a few later we see the proper research to prove that our feeling was good.
Question 1 as a challange would be :
How long is a specifique period anyway, and why should I change the training, if I still see a positive response following my stimmulus ?
Why do we see a lot of athletes in very good shape coming out of a basic aerobic phase , and see very strong decline of performance during peaking ?
I would challange Bompa's idea with the question : Is the most importanmt period perhaps the resting period. ? Who would pay 250 dollar a month for a resting plan ? Why do we produce training plans and not resting plans.?
Why have some athletes after a year retirement a suuden supper performance , when they do a comback.?
Why do people like Frischknecht do the whole year so well. Is it feeling, experinece or finnally have the gut's to do some resting ?
Let's see wheter we get some research , and feeling discussion going and have some fun over the holidaydiscussion.
