I hope everybody started well into the olympia year 2004.
I hope we can give some more interesting inside discussions in the upcoming month, leading to the olympics in Athen.
In the Mountain bike scene in Canada we have actually 4 riders , who will go to the qualification races . Two of them will have a very big chance to be actually a part of the 2004 games the younger one will give it a try and get some experience for 2008.
We may give you some hints and hope of some good feedback on some ideas we try to do.
Pushing this level means a ) I need the genetic gifted athlete ( physiology ) b( he has to have the mental strength to stay over 6 - 8 years in the game ( the 2 top guys are in their 8 year working with us ) and be able to focus. c ) he has to give optimal feedback about body reaction and mental situation. d ) and there has to be a team around ( family , friends , association and perhaps a coach ) who all pull on this one single goal with the athlete in the center.( but the athlete has to understand , that he is not the center but the ambassador for his " team ".
Besides all that we try to get still some type of a controlled situation into his training.
As we discussed in 2003 there is a lot of theory around , but the practical use is still the big problem.
I hope with some of the examples over the next month to give some ideas back to Dan and all the other friends , who e mailed us for some input.
on the 9 /10 / 11 of January we have the next training camp here with the top athletes.
Here a short inside view what the focus will be.

1. Reasses the current situation . LBP level in HR and Wattage and the possible metabolic factors each of the athlete is able to test on his own during the next training period.
We will give you some Watt/ bodyweight ratio from the canadian athletes and from the european athletes as an interindividual comparison , but also some intra individual changes.
We will not use the athletes names as you may understand.
2. Set up the training proposal for the next 20 days.
Controle the individual intensity for the Mitochondria density development. Questions for the athlete is :
Duration , what is too long , what is too short , Intensity . ( control over Glucose , P O 2 , ammonia , Lactate , wattage. ) What do I use and when.
The big question abaout fatigue you remember.
How often ( Recovery versus adaptation )
Build in of bike specific coordination plus for some adaptation on Rotor crank. Athletic development and core strength.
3. Set up LBP stabilization training or if possible improvement.
Here we will compare the different athletes changes over the last period , what do they changed on their own , and how did this changed the result to the other athletes. ( % of A1 and A 2 training ratio )
A1 and A2 are both aerobe dominant training units but with different goals. ( FFA - Mitochondria / Gucose - Capillarisation / MCT / MCT 4 )
4. Move into more enzymatic intensity sessions as some of the athletes will start the season in Europe in February.
5. Introduction in Chrono nutrition. This is updating the athletes in the newest research on how to use when what kind of nutrtion ( during , before and after the training. ) For all the european friends : this will be one big topic in Spain in march / april and may. )
6. Stretching ? Myth and knowledge.
How to avoid MDB and MDH.
( Muscular dys-balance and muscular dys-harmony )
When to stretch and how / a critical discussion about some tradition.
Now this is our overview coming up. We hope and may be able to get some help in and around this topics from you people out there as well.( you may be a part of the team ) We hope again not to lecture here on this site , but to discuss. Discussion means accepting each others view , even if we not always can back it up with immediate research. It may be that some research is not yet out, but the athlete feel the need and the help to do certain things.
So we will be back as soon we have some more info.
Cheers Juerg and Herb.
