Hi Dan, I assume you studied Dudley's orig. Work.
For all others here a summary , which may sound like another study , than the one from O. Anderson.
Dudley ( 1982 ) trained rats ! on a treadmill for 8 ! weeks. ( question of functional or structural respond.
I may give some studies later, who show , that * weeks rarely produces a measurable structural respond.Even bone structure is after 8 weeks just functionally repaired but very often lacks the specific structure ( fiber and osteo direction for optimal strength Certainly if it was casted. ( see calcaneus fracture and the risk off re- fracture because of lack of structural repair.
So Dudley stressed his "Athletes" by 60/70/80/95/105/115 % of VO2 max.
( Compare Andersen's summary.
The 105 and the 115 % was differently stressed ( interval ) What a surprise, why could they not run 45 min on this level ? ( just kidding )
For each % closer to VO2 max the Enzyme activity would climb. ( Enzyme ! ). but only up to a time of 45 - 60 min. ( May be it was not in the FFA intensity but more in the next higher one ? )
Now Andersen's summary states, that there was no difference in the fiber responds. Dudley makes a difference !
The effect varies strong between the different fiber types he states !
in the II b ( new II x ) fibers you had to go at least 80 % of the VO 2 max. ( surprised ? ). And if they went faster the result was even better.
The II a fibers only improved till up to 80 % of VO 2 max. A world class endurance athlete will have his LBP by 80 % and sometimes even higher.
Actual situation of canadas top MTB guys and one girl. LBP to ULL ( upper linear limit which is more or less VO2 max. 84 % / 81 % 81 % 82 %.
So any stress and you will see after monday a nice study is in theys : aerobic " area. If they pushed harder ( the rats ), there was no additional effect. Now the STF fibers improved enzymatic till 95 % of VO2 max.
If above they not just not improved anymore , they actually got worse. Why ?
If you follow now this study and compare with Hollow. you see how , if you sell apples ,to the person who likes oranges , he or she may be not as happy as it could be , but nevertheless he or she has some fruits.
Follow this two studies and you will earlier or later hit a name Coyle et all.
A very intriguing study on cyclist about structural and functional ideas.
From there you may go to one of the basic studies of Pette ( 1984 ) on catabolic and anabolic respond to mitochondria densities.
Now I hope you get ichy to find out .
Have fun on your training , till later Juerg
