Hi Kevin,
You bring up as usual a good point. Testing just short before an important event or 4 - 5 weeks before.
It may sound hard , but some of the high performance athletes are menatlly really weak.( unsecure )
May it be , that they never got educated to be their own coach ? do they do what we tell them.
Remeber to repeat need education, to challange this needs brain ).
A " bad test " may put them under pressure.
So from that point of view I hope we get an answere from somebody out of that field.
May point is :
Yes I like to test very short before the race.
In fact I did some cases with Ryder, Geoff and Martina , where we used the " warm " up , resp. tested as a warm up.
We used the results for the 5 min later start of the race.
Result at that time was win in the junior and in the Pro elite. and in the cadet Cat.
Advantage , you can give exact info about the way they should race.
We did at that day a test immediatly after they went trough the finish linie.
This gave us a complete new idea how much " catabolic " takes place during a race , and how the LBP reacts.
Based on this experience we check every day after the race , how long for different systems it takes to recover to baselinie and perhaps supercompensate.
There where a lot of interesting findings , and even more questions after that.
Short answer :
If it is an athlete you educated and he understands, that we not Test , but assess , than he will do it on his own anyway.
As you know, you do not have to go all out , but up to LBP HR or LBP speed , or LBP wattage.
Check Lactate at that level , see recovery performance and you know how you could " safe " the race , if some small things go wrong, like
liver storage ability. ( Remember using Morning lactate prior and 10 - 15 min post breakfast and you still have some time about your chrono nutrition.
I hope this makes sense . Juerg.
