Pure runners who have looked at them believe it is because they force the runner to improve their form while training the necessary muscles to sustain the form. I could see that deep water running would do a similar thing, at least to training the muscles as the HF's and hamstrings are forced to be activated to overcome the resistance of the water in moving the legs where no such resistance is present when running on land.

It would make sense that the PC's would have similar, if not better, benefits because it is easier to do and doesn't require a pool.

We will have to await the studies.
